Forty years after the scandalous Assisi meeting of 1986, Pope Leo XIV will take part in its anniversary gathering. On October 27, Leo XIV will travel to Assisi for the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace convened by Pope John Paul II in 1986. Back then, a Buddha statue was placed on the tabernacle. The 2026 gathering, titled “Disarmed and Disarming Peace,” will bring together 384 representatives of religions, cultures and institutions from 53 countries. Leo XIV will preside over the Christian prayer for peace in the Lower Basilica together with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, while representatives of other religions will pray separately in different locations to their idols. The religious leaders will then gather in the Piazza Inferiore outside the Basilica of Saint Francis for the concluding ceremony and message of peace.

A 17-year-old Dutch girl was killed by euthanasia after doctors concluded that she was experiencing “unbearable and hopeless psychological suffering”. Milou Verhoof died on 2 October 2023 after suffering from mental-health problems for years and undergoing repeated treatments. Her case was later examined by the Netherlands’ Regional Euthanasia Review Committees, which found that the doctor had complied with the country’s legal requirements for euthanasia. Because Milou was 17, her parents had to be involved in the decision-making process, although Dutch law did not require their consent. Her parents ultimately supported her "decision". But, many of us found out the hard way that taking mega-doses of Vitamin D to enhance immunity to all of the coronavirus variants that were going around a few years ago, wasn't such a great idea. In my case, a timely blood test alerted me to the problem. I immediately stopped taking Vitamin D and my kidney function returned to normal. (Whew that was close!)

O’Malley of Fall River, the future Cardinal of Boston. His religious and community status has a somewhat complicated history. A canonical penal process found him guilty of sexually abusing minors over several decades. However, Peris is cared for in a Jesuit residence. The punishment was announced on October 5. It comes more than two years after Peris himself admitted abusing minors. On May 7, 2024, the Jesuits publicly disclosed that Peris had “recently” acknowledged sexually abusing minors as far back as 1972. Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa of Jerusalem has expressed his condolences following the deaths of two Palestinian Christian women in an Israeli air strike on Gaza City. “With deep sorrow and grief,” the Patriarch mourned Maysa Khader Ibrahim Abu Daoud (Ayyad) and Mary Hafez Michel Najjar (Abu Daoud). The two women, who were mother and daughter, were killed in the strike on the night of October 2. On behalf of the Patriarchate, its clergy and faithful, Cardinal Pizzaballa extended his “deepest condolences” to the families of the two women and to Gaza’s Christian community.
